The Descent is an ancient rite of passage from Maiden to Mother, through which an initiated woman guides 'called' initiates over the threshold of this archetypal death so they too can experience a rebirth into Self, rising into wholeness and integrating both light and dark aspects within.

This was and still is a sacred journey into the inner world of your being where you are guided to meet and face off with shadow aspects of yourself which may have long been abandoned, rejected and exiled to the darkness. You are led to transmute stories of the past, release emotional stagnation and alchemise your pain into love, returning home to the seat of Self ~ your innate light, power and sovereignty.

It is a journey through which you are called to surrender in service to something greater than yourself.

 

This is a delicate, intimate and powerfully liberating experience in which every woman is invited to be initiated through. Many are called to embark on this journey for the first time during or after their first Saturn return (approximately at the age of 29) which signifies an energetic death and the calling from Maiden to Mother, though some may experience insight into this holy portal earlier through the physical transition into Motherhood through the bearing of children, and others later.

 

Many stories have been written about this ancient rite of passage into archetypal Mother which serve as a map and guide for your inner journeys to the underworld though they may never fully prepare you for that which you are to experience during your own Descent.

 

Some stories you may desire to explore are those of Persephone/Kore, Demeter and Hades (God of the Underworld), Psyche and Eros (Cupid) and Inanna/Ishtar and Ereshkigal.

 

Each one of these stories speaks of a Maiden/Princess who receives a calling to journey deep into the underworld, through which she must embark on a spiritual quest of alchemisation and reclamation, ultimately surrendering herself over to the darkness where she experiences an inner death; only to be reborn into wholeness and light, integrating both sides of the spectrum and rising into her sovereignty and the archetypal role of Mother/Queen.

 

In each of these stories there is also reference of a sexual nature, indicating the connection between this sacred journey and our innate life force energy, a.k.a Kundalini/Shakti. This energy is often depicted as a fiery serpentine feminine energy which, when awakened, begins to uncoil itself from the base of the spine at the root chakra and travels up the body in a fluid spiral motion through the gateways of the chakras, purifying egoic ideologies, stories, behaviours and patterns that are no longer serving and/or aligned to the highest good in order to activate a deeper truth, gnosis, creation and Divine Feminine power within.

 

Once it reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head, this is an experience which is often described as Self-actualisation, enlightenment, oneness, connection to All That Is and is the meeting point of Shakti and Shiva (Feminine and Masculine energies). It is told that once a woman has journeyed into the depths of her inner underworld to reclaim her Divine Feminine essence in totality, she will then embark on another Descent to reclaim her Divine Masculine counterpart, calling herself home into oneness, wholeness and inner Divine Union; though I have found through my own experiences that this is not a linear process and both energies must rise in unison with one another, with one always preceding the other.

 

In some religious texts this energy is portrayed as sinful and one of witchery, sorcery and dark magick, though I believe it is grossly misunderstood and construed as such to invoke fear within women in reclaiming their innate power and truth. Kundalini/Shakti is the natural life force of creation which governs universal energy and though it has the potential to be used in its lowest vibrational essence for harmful destruction, manipulation, greed, control and hierarchical power, it also has the potential to be used for greatness, creation, liberation, sovereignty, unity and free will to all humankind.

 

There is potential in all things to be used for the greater good or for harm and it is through the lens you perceive such things and the purity of your intention, thoughts, beliefs and actions that determines that which you see and experience.

 

There is a rising of women (and men, through the polarity of Master/Prince to Father/King) now receiving this calling within to embark on their own sacred Descent journey and it is one through which I have journeyed many cycles of initiation myself, as we are called into the darkness of winter every month through our bleed, during big or small transitions of change within our lives and with the shifting of the tides and seasons in alignment with the Mother herself.
